Helping developers function faster on serverless — and everywhere else

By IOpipe Co-founders Erica Windisch and Adam Johnson

We started IOpipe in 2016 with some burning ideas on how to make it easier for developers to build and run serverless applications.

What we quickly recognized was that debugging and monitoring challenges had become a major barrier to serverless adoption. Debugging issues across millions of invocations throughout many functions, and living ephemerally, without a concept of a traditional process and host management quickly highlighted a gap in tooling for serverless. Meanwhile, with minimized infrastructure requirements, serverless developers have found themselves increasingly accountable for the performance and reliability of their applications and needing purpose-built tools for serverless architectures.

So, we built IOpipe.

In the past three and a half years, we’ve seen a high demand for serverless monitoring tools, worked with a great team, gained thousands of users, co-launched new features on the main-stage at AWS re:Invent, and had the opportunity to provide real-time visibility into the most granular behaviors of serverless applications for amazing organizations like Matson, Rackspace, and Comic Relief.

Today, we’ve reached a key milestone for IOpipe as members of our team join New Relic to bring our expertise to deliver one of the best serverless observability offerings on the market. Joining New Relic enables our team to bring our domain expertise and passion for helping serverless developers into a broader set of organizations whose applications span traditional servers, virtual machines, containers, and of course, serverless. It also provides the opportunity to take the best existing features of IOpipe and join forces with the team currently building New Relic Serverless to provide a whole new set of features identified as a top priority by both our users and the great organizations already using New Relic.

Note: If you have a serverless feature request for us, now is the perfect time to connect.

Thank you to all of our users, partners, and the entire serverless community for collaborating with us every step of the way. In addition, we’re grateful to our lineup of IOpipe investors, including Boldstart Ventures, Correlation Ventures, Las Olas Venture Capital, Madrona Venture Group, NEA, Storm Ventures, Struck Capital, Techstars, and Underscore VC.

Our collective purpose has always been to make it more fun to be a developer on serverless, and the next phase in our team’s journey will provide the resources to better support the developers building the next era of serverless applications.

What’s next for IOpipe users?

If you’re currently using IOpipe to monitor and debug your AWS Lambda applications, our goal is to make the transition to New Relic Serverless as simple and efficient as possible. We’ve built tooling and published a Migration Guide to help with the process.

In addition, we’re providing a free trial of New Relic Serverless and extensive support through our Community Slack.

If you have a question that’s not answered in our FAQs or a feature request for our roadmap, please reach out via Slack.

But will you be at re:Invent and all the other serverless events?

Yes! Look for our team bringing stickers, nail polish, and serverless observability under the New Relic Serverless banner at this year’s 2019 AWS re:Invent.

Connect with us at our magical re:Invent booth meet wise sages, learn advanced moves, and gain power-ups for the “Quest for Observability.” In addition, we’re currently scheduling 1:1 serverless sessions for KubeCon in San Diego this month.
